how to make a 'Jordy bag'

In January 2004, Jordy shared with the world her instructions on how to make a small, square-bottomed handbag on the popular craft message board, craftster.org. The thread has since grown to over 430,000 views (and is still growing!) chock-full of questions, admiration, and thanks inspiring many craftsters to create their own versions of the 'Jordy bag'.

In March of 2005 the Jordy bag was featured in a Time Magazine spread as part of an article on the growing craft subculture. The 'Jordy bag' has also graced the pages of both Venus and BUST magazines.

The Jordynn Mackenzie Story

Hello! My name is Jordy and I've created this website as a home for my line of limited-edition fashion accessories under the name Jordynn Mackenzie.

I started sewing around 2002 when I took over my mom's sewing machine - a Kenmore Ultrastitch12. This is the machine I still use to make everything you see on this website, along with my Janome MyLock serger. I taught myself to sew beginning with simple straight lines, making myself bags out of old jeans or altering clothing to fit.

In 2004, I was fairly active on the wonderful craftster.org message boards and quickly took a liking to making handbags. Frustrated with the lack free patterns with clear instructions at the time, I posted a thread with instructions on how to make a square-bottomed bag. To my surprise, people started calling them 'Jordy Bags' and the thread has just exploded!

Around that time I started playing with the idea of selling my handbags. I chose the name Pink Olive and created small handbags, totes and wallets in my spare time. After I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in New Media and graduated from Ryerson University, I decided to start fresh and changed the name to Jordynn Mackenzie and here we are today!

About Jordynn Mackenzie Items

Bags

Every Jordynn Mackenzie item is 100% handmade and meticulously inspected with great attention to detail in my tiny home studio in Toronto, Ontario. I print some fabrics using block or screen printing methods and many of my fabrics are vintage or purchased second hand. Materials range from wool tweeds to vintage polyester prints, all of which were individually chosen due to their charming patterns, rich textures, and sublime colours. Items are produced in limited-edition runs and many are one-of-a-kind creations.

Care Instructions

Jordynn Mackenzie items are made from a variety of clean new and reclaimed fabrics. Gentle spot cleaning or hand washing with water and a mild soap is reccommended. Although they are made to last, please do not machine wash or dry your Jordynn Mackenzie items!
