Soft Corps is an installation where visitors can touch and play with toy weapons made from soft felt. The installation takes the appearance of a child’s toy chest stocked with soft replicas of the weapons that are used in popular video games and entertainment media. Softcore investigates the distinctions we make between violence in the context of our entertainment and violence in the real world.
SOFT***CORPS is a brand of playful realistic weaponry made of colourful wool, felt, and fleece. Constructed by hand with patience and care in contrast to their molded metal counterparts, every SOFT***CORPS weapon includes a fun detail like a rattling grenade or the removable clip of an AK-47.
SOFT***CORPS parodies the ways in which violence is portrayed and marketed in our entertainment media. When these violent objects become soft plush toys, they pose no physical threat much like the way we experience violence on TV or in video games.
The child-friendly plush texture of the weapons accentuates their symbolic forms and encourages questions about the brand’s intentions. They are made true-to-size and contain several hand details that make the weapons look as realistic as possible with the given medium.
